Spider Web

Materials

colored thread, string, or waxed thread
plastic spiders (or make your own)
pipe cleaners
scissors
glue

Instructions:

Use three pieces of pipe cleaner (diagram A) to create the arms of the spider web. The pieces can be full length or half length depending on how big you want to make your web.
Twist two pipe cleaners together to create an X shape (diagram B).
Twist the third pipe cleaner into place and adjust to make sure the arms are equal distance apart (diagram C).
If you are having trouble twisting the pipe cleaners into shape, just lay them in the pattern and use glue to stick them together.
To make the web, wrap the thread around the arms in a spiral pattern. The actual length depends on the size of the spider web and the number of times you spiral around the web. The web in the picture is made from 6 inch long pipe cleaners and used about 1 meter or 1 yard of thread.
Tie the thread to the arm at the top of the web (12 o’clock position) near the center point. Work in a clockwise direction and loop it around each arm (diagram D). Work in a spiral pattern until you reach the outside of the web. Tie the thread off and cut off any remaining thread or use it to create a loop for hanging the spider web..
Glue on the spider or create your own with a pipe cleaner.

Idea from Parent:

Pull apart a cotton ball and put wisps of cotton around the web.

For younger children:

Younger children could find winding the thread around the arms of the spider web a bit challenging. Skip this step. Use the idea of pulling apart bits from a cotton ball. They could use glue to attach the cotton wisps to the arms of the web.
