Egyptians never believed that mummies would walk around. That idea comes from Hollywood. The Egyptians thought the mummy was a home for the spirit. In fact, most tombs had a statue with the person's name so that it could be used to house the spirit if the mummy was destroyed.

Make your own Mummy!

Kids can make their own Mummy!

Materials (old sheet and pillow case, elastics, lots of rolls of toilet paper)

Layout the sheet on the floor.
Each corner of the sheet will become an arm or a leg. Bunch the sheet together to create each limb. Use elastics to keep the shape.
(see picture 1).
Create a head with the pillow case (either by rolling it, or stuffing it). Use elastics to attach the head to the body.
Start wrapping the toilet paper around the mummy. Work your way down and back each limb. (see picture 2)

Hints:

Wrapping multiple layers works better than one thick layer.
Use white or neutral colored sheets, or you'll need more toilet paper!
Use coat hangers to make a frame if you want your mummy to stand up.
Make a paper mache death mask for you mummy.
