Most of the projects in our free crafts and kids
activities Library only use items found around the house. In this
case, we've made an exception. Children can create amazing results with polymer
modeling clay. It's worth buying!
There are different brands of plastic modeling
clay. Each type has its own advantages. We've tried a few
different brands and my children like
working with Sculpey best. It comes in a variety of different
styles, colors, and combinations. It's best to start with a multi
pack for the color variety, then add extra colors when you see which ones
get used up first. Surprisingly, a little Sculpey can go a long way.
My children spent a wonderful afternoon creating lots of different
items. They started with the pictures on the package, and then came
up with their own projects.
Kids have fun with crafts.
How to Use:
Read the instructions that come in the package. There are
some good suggestions on using Sculpey.
The children should work with or knead the Scupley for a couple of
minutes before starting to model. It becomes much more pliable
as it warms up.
Children can etch on features, but the results are better when the
features are molded from a contrasting color, like the features on
the pumpkin or the teeth on the bookworm.
Blend colors of Sculpey together to create new colors or shades of
a color.
Sculpey objects should be less than 1/4 of an inch thick.
For thicker items, like the pumpkin or the frog's body, create a center from aluminum foil (rolled into a
ball) then cover the shape with thin pieces of Sculpey.
Finished objects must be baked to harden. We use a glass
tray in our toaster oven on a low setting. Read the directions
in the package for the temperature and time for the type of clay you
have.
If you would like to
make your own modeling clay, there are lots of different clay
and dough recipes to choose from.
